Calgary’s independent animation festival is going nationwide to celebrate the best in Canadian and global animation. Giant Incandescent Resonating Animation Festival (GIRAF) will showcase almost 90 short films for audiences across Canada on-demand from November 19 to 28.
Lisa Wilton spoke with award-winning filmmaker, producer, teacher and “Queen of independent animation” Joanna Priestley, whose short Jung & Restless screens as part of the festival.
“I began doing ‘subconscious’ animation experiments, working straight ahead with no planning, storyboards,” Priestley shared. “Inspired by my growing understanding of the symbolism of the dream images, I decided to see if I could make a film from the material and added mandalas, images from saved dream notes and Jungian symbols.”
