National Indigenous Peoples Day on CKUA

Throughout the day on Wednesday, June 21, you will hear music to honour National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Alberta Morning with host Grant Stovel
6-9am MT
We’ll have music, conversation, and celebration. Hear William Prince, Aysanabee, Jay Gilday, Julian Taylor, Elisapie, DJ Shub, Terry Uyarak, Cris Derksen, Shane Ghostkeeper, Joel Wood, and Jeremy Dutcher; plus a few CKUA-exclusive in-studio performances, and a game of “Six Degrees of Buffy Sainte-Marie”! It’s going to a morning of exciting new music, thoughtful conversations, brilliant stories, and joyous celebration.

Discoveries with host Leo Cripps
9-11am MT
Leo will be sharing music by Indigenous artists from Central and South America, including Brazilian Djuena Tikuna, Thaline Karajá, and Colombian Toto La Mamposina, and, of course, acts from North America as well.

The Upload with host Kate Stevens
11am – 1pm MT
The National Music Centre is launching the 2023 round of new artists for its Speak Up! exhibition, and Kate will welcome David McLeod, the curator of the series. He’ll be a 30-minute DJ, choosing some songs and talking about the exhibition, which features five different artists.

Thoroughfare with host Tony King
1- 3pm MT
Tony selects the music of Indigenous artists based in places as disparate as the Australian outback, the plains of Alberta, to the glaciers of Thunder Bay. We will hear how the sounds of Indigenous peoples are as diverse as the landscapes from which they are raised. Fused into the mix will be the electro-downtempo sounds of classic roots along with artists like Cris Derksen, who delicately dances along the lines of classical, traditional and contemporary music.

Traffic Jams with host Lisa Wilton
3- 6pm MT
Lisa will spin Indigenous-made music from around the world, including a small feature on Link Wray. In hour two she’ll welcome Manitoba singer Richard Inman as a 30-Minute DJ. Hear his new single as well as his song picks.

Far Out with host Amy van Keeken
6-8pm MT
Amy will include music by Joe Rainey, King Stingray, Gurrumul, Georgia Lee, Handsome Tiger, Ansley Simpson, Laura Niquay, Zoon, Willie Thrasher, Cris Derksen, Double Rider, Digawolf, Willie Dunn, Northern Cree, Nisto, Sewepagaham, Uyarak, Shane Ghostkeeper, and more.

Classic Examples with guest host Oskar Zybart
8-10pm MT
Hear music by Andrew Balfour, Matthew Cardinal, Sonny-Ray Day Rider, Cris Derksen, and Jessica McMann, all contemporary Indigenous artists making contributions to classical music.

Twilight with host Amy van Keeken
10pm – midnight
Amy invites you into the Twilight hours to hear music by Melody McKiver, Joanne Shenandoah, Tzo’kam, Russell Wallace, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, and Jay Gilday.
