Songs and Wishes from CKUA Board Members

Story

The CKUA Board of Directors is a colourful, committed group of professionals dedicated to helping to steer the good ship CKUA with their expertise, insight and community connections. Earlier this spring, we said goodbye and thank you to three board members: Mary Corbett, Bill Roggensack and Bud Steen. We also welcomed three new board members. Meet Craig Corbett, Corran Hockey and Chris Huebner.

To celebrate these six stellar individuals, we asked them each two questions.

What is your music request for this Spring Fundraiser?

What is your wish for CKUA Radio?

Bud Steen, outgoing board member:

Fortune Teller” by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss from the Raising Sand album.  “I selected the song given the excitement around the pair’s coming to the Edmonton Folk Festival this August.  It will be a summer highlight for sure.  Reminds me of how the festivals in Alberta reflect CKUA’s programming and bring musicians our listeners are familiar with to their locales.”

“My fervent wish for CKUA’s future is financial stability.  I would love to see us with sufficient reserves to maintain our broadcast standards and ensure we are connecting with our community deep into our second century.”

Mary Corbett, outgoing board member:

Love Over and Over” by Kate and Anna McGarrigle. “Love over and over is what we all gain from listening to CKUA.”

“CKUA is an integral part of my life. My days are not complete unless I hear CKUA. I’m always listening—learning, appreciating the new and old sounds, and the thoughtful insights the announcers bring to the airwaves.

I’m delighted that we are all part of a community who are listening at the same time, each experiencing CKUA separately and together. Community matters.  What a treasure we have.

Let’s move forward into the next century of music, culture and the arts together. The time is now!! Donate to this cultural icon today and we can all listen into the future.”

Bill Roggensack, outgoing board member:

At My Kitchen Table” by The Lonesome Ace Stringband. “I like the ideas expressed in this song about where our creative thoughts come from, and particularly the advice to keep on trying because ‘if you never get it wrong, you won’t ever get it right.’ That also says a lot about where CKUA is at this critical moment in its history. Chris Coole (the vocalist and banjo player) just happens to be a personal friend to whom I am indebted for what little I know about playing clawhammer.”

“I want CKUA to be there long after I’m gone, doing what it does so well and just getting better. I want my grandkids to have the same learning opportunities with music that I’ve had, expanding their horizons and deepening their curiosities. And I want CKUA to be strong and sustainable, navigating the complex competition for ‘ears’ in a world of podcasts and streaming services that not even Steve Jobs foresaw.”

Corran Hockey, incoming board member:

We’re in it Together” by Rich Aucoin. “Rich’s live performances are amazing—I saw him at the Calgary Folk Music Festival last year and danced in the rain with friends and the rest of the crowd, hooked by his energy and enthusiasm. This song is about people coming together for a worthy cause so I thought it would be perfect for this year’s fundraiser.”

“I’m excited for a future where CKUA is truly sustainable financially. Where the amazing organization—staff, announcers and everyone involved with the station, can focus on inspiring and connecting people and continuing to expand on our already incredible programming and support for local artists.”

Craig Corbett, incoming board member:

The Story” by Brandi Carlile. “My wife, daughter, and I all admire her brilliant songwriting; her music is on a regular rotation in our home.”

“Sustainability. It’s a challenge to operate on an annual fundraising cycle, our goal should be to chart a path for a regular, consistent, income stream for CKUA, whether that be via a sustainability fund or some other financial vehicle.”

Chris Huebner, incoming board member:

I Need a Dollar” by Aloe Blacc. “It just seems fitting for this campaign.  CKUA needs listener support more than ever.”

“I hope CKUA celebrates a 200-year anniversary.  Great music and supporting artists are so important for the vibrancy of our province and country.”

CKUA’s Spring Fundraiser is in full swing. Help make these wishes become reality. Donate now to ensure CKUA can carry on its good work, into the future.
