Jazz Drummer Jon McCaslin

Story

Jazz is known for being free-spirited, with complex chords and interplay among instruments. So what does a jazz drummer add to that mix?

Calgary jazz fans will find out on April 19 when a trio, led by drummer Jon McCaslin, will perform fresh arrangements, old standards, and some pieces by McCaslin himself. Called Jazz at Lincoln Park, the event will allow the drummer to share his passion for the jazz tradition and for new compositions, too.

McCaslin is well known in Alberta’s live music scene. He started playing the drums at age nine in his hometown, Regina. After stints in Montreal and Toronto (he has degrees from McGill University and U of T), he moved to Calgary 15 years ago. Now he teaches, writes a jazz blog called 4 on the floor, and works in music full time.

“Jazz drumming is unique,” he says. “There’s a spirit of improvisation. You’re on a quest for individuality while also working as a group.”

At the Lincoln Park event, McCaslin will play drums and cymbals, sharing the stage with guitarist Aaron Shorr and bassist Jeff Gammon. “The chord progressions come out of the compositions themselves,” he says. “It’s not totally free, but there is room to improvise.”

“There a lot of very talented jazz artists in Alberta,” says McCaslin. “Jazz music faces the same challenges that other styles and artists face. It’s a challenge to make a living. There are obstacles that can get in the way. But I also see optimism,” he says. “There are opportunities for artists to be creative.”

And, he adds, there are many jazz fans among CKUA’s audience. “I listen to CKUA often, and I appreciate the programming. The attention to Alberta jazz artists is unique.”
