International Women’s Day 2024

News

March 8, International Women’s Day, is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. At CKUA, our focus will be the cultural and musical contributions of women. Tune in for interesting conversations and fantastic music, on March 8 and in the days surrounding it.

Tuesday, March 5
The Departure Lounge, 6pm – 8pm
Host Erin Ross celebrates some women’s voices from right here in our own province of Alberta.

Wednesday, March 6
Far Out, 6pm – 8pm
Host Amy van Keeken celebrates with a playlist featuring artists like Oumou Sangare, Laetitia Sadier, Cassia Hardy, Rosali, Asha Bhosle, La Luz and more. You’ll also hear a few tracks from Feel Like Jumping: The Best Of Studio One Women including Marcia Griffiths, Norma Fraser and Nina Soul.

Thursday, March 7
Discoveries, 9am – 11am
Host Leo Cripps will have a program of music by women, and will celebrate American singer-songwriter Taylor Dayne, who has a birthday March 7. Plus, hear Leo’s live interview with Cree-Métis singer-songwriter iskwē.

Friday, March 8
Alberta Morning, 6am – 9am
Host Grant Stovel will spotlight Alberta’s (and CKUA’s) special connection with the legendary Folkways record label, and celebrate some of the trailblazing women who’ve recorded for Folkways, both past and present. He’ll also look ahead to the Women of Folkways concert that will take place in Edmonton March 9. As well, Ndidi O has a new album out soon, and she will be Grant’s guest to talk about her new music and share the first advance single.

Friday, March 8
Traffic Jams, 3pm – 6pm
Host Lisa Wilton will celebrate International Women’s Day with a playlist consisting of mostly Canadian voices in genres ranging from roots, indie pop and soul to reggae and rock. And award-winning Calgary singer and songwriter Emily Triggs will stop by to premiere her song, “Summer In Nevada,” the first single from her upcoming album, The Great Escape.

Friday, March 8
Friday Night Blues Party, 9pm – midnight
Join host Cam Hayden for an celebration of women in blues. You’ll hear music by Bessie Smith and Memphis Minnie, Koko Taylor, Etta James, and the highly talented women in blues today: Sue Foley, Kat Danser, Ally Venable, Danielle Nicole, Ghalia Volt, and more.

Saturday, March 9
Open Nights, 9pm – midnight
Host Mark Rodgers has new heavy “Can Con” from legends Kittie and award-winning band Unleash the Archers, whose singer Britney Slays has been leading the band since the late 2000s.

Sunday, March 10
Roy’s Record Room, 2pm – 3pm
Join host Roy Forbes as he celebrates International Women’s Day with a stack of Jazzy Women at 78 rpm. You’ll hear fine jazz vocalizing from trail-breakers like Lena Horne, Gladys Palmer, Anita O’Day, Ivie Anderson, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Nellie Lutcher, and many more. All spinning from the original 78 rpm shellac discs.

Monday, March 11
