The Denim Daddies and CKUA

Story

The Denim Daddies have a new album, and they’re thrilled to see it connecting with CKUA’s audience.

Guitarist and singer Andrew Brostrom says that when the band got a call from host Amy van Keeken to reveal that Northern Goods was the #1 album for the week of March 15, it was “super exciting.” He says, “It’s thrilling to know that our record is well received by the hosts and the listeners.”

The new recording is The Denim Daddies’ first full-length album. “It feels cohesive, like a piece of art,” says Brostrom. “We felt it was the right time to take that step. It’s been fun and exciting.”

Community plays a role in the album thematically, with songs dedicated to friends and family. And, says Brostrom, “Kurtis’s grandma is on the album.”

It’s true! Bassist/vocalist Kurtis Cockerill got an audio recording of his grandmother, who used to write cowboy poetry in Manitoba. “It was hard to get the recording up to album quality,” says Brostrom. Recording engineer Scott Franchuk helped, as did the whole production team. “It was cool to include her. Every time she hears about the album doing well, it thrills her.”

As CKUA heads into its Spring Fundraiser, Brostrom speaks plainly about what CKUA means to The Denim Daddies. “Community radio is where all bands take their first steps in getting their music out there. There are some great stations out there. I’m biased, but CKUA is my favourite. There’s no station with such enthusiastic hosts and such a loyal audience. The music selection is top notch.”

He adds, “CKUA has been a huge supporter of us. From our start to seeing our album at the top of the CKUA chart is amazing. We love CKUA. It’s so wonderful to have this in Alberta, and to hear such a great mix of music.”

The Denim Daddies will play at The Aviary in Edmonton on May 24, and at Calgary’s East Town Get Down on May 25. Summer shows will be announced on their website soon.
