Seasonal Schedule Changes for Classical Music

News

Intermission: an interval between the parts of an entertainment experience, such as the acts of a play or the portions of a concert. A pause.

We’re calling it “Intermission,” and we hope that it will be a pleasant musical interlude for you, our listeners. CKUA is introducing new classical programs, to connect with the community and allow host creativity to shine through.

New programs will begin March 30 and continue until Autumn 2024, when we will happily welcome classical host Mark Antonelli back to CKUA. Interim Content Director Arianne Smith-Piquette says, Long-time listeners of CKUA may be familiar with the name Marylu Walters, the author of CKUA: Radio Worth Fighting For. And she’s also Mark Antonelli’s mum! Marylu has Alzheimer’s disease and Mark is caring for her. While Mark is away, and with his full support, we’re trying out some new programs over spring and summer.”

Arianne notes, “The voices you’ll hear are familiar but will offer a fresh perspective on the lively classical genre and community. Whether you are a performer, a listener, or someone simply drawn to the magic of music and storytelling, please join us in welcoming these new programs to CKUA.”

Mark is going to be keenly listening to the programming, and we invite you all to let us know what you think by reaching out to feedback@ckua.com.

We hope that you will enjoy these new programs!  Thanks so much to our adventurous, loyal classical music audience. It’s a privilege to enjoy music with you. Here’s what we have planned for “Intermission.”

Sundays, 6am – 9am
Morningsong
with host Joe Hartfeil
Morningsong unfolds in reflection of that special Sunday morning pace as the world around us awakens in phases and stages. The first hour features unaccompanied solo instruments, followed by an hour of duos, chamber groups and other small ensembles. The third hour brings orchestral works into focus before culminating in one vocal piece to set up the rest of the day’s song-filled programming.

Mondays, 8pm – 10pm
A Newcomer to Old Music
with host Lark Clark
Listen to classical music with fresh ears. Lark Clark presents a program of exploration, curiosity, and variety in the world of classical music. You might hear period instruments, or familiar pieces played in new ways. And hear from the Albertans who are passionate about early music: the performers, conductors, and instrumentalists who make old music come alive.

Note: On April 1, Lark will host a send-off program, to say farewell to her time as host of the Monday edition of Classic Examples. Then, A Newcomer to Old Music will have its debut on April 8.

Tuesdays, 8pm – 10pm
From Stage to Screen
with host Aaron Au
From Stage to Screen is a celebration of the symphonic and instrumental music that brings the stories of Hollywood, Broadway, Canadian, and international cinema to life. It’s nostalgic and fresh, engaging and fun. Dramas, comedies, westerns, and thrillers—they’re all made better when the music complements the story. Hear music by John Williams, Ennio Morricone, Joe Hisaishi, and more.

Wednesdays, 8pm – 10pm
The Score
with host Oskar Zybart
The world of orchestral music remains as vibrant and active as ever. Fresh recordings and unique interpretations continue to spring from legacy artists and emerging talents alike. In The Score, you’ll hear new pieces, new recordings, new performances. Enjoy recent additions to CKUA’s classical music library, and recordings that feature ambitious arrangements and orchestral originality. Host Oskar Zybart will also present periodic chats with people in our classical music community, for an inside scoop on music shared on Alberta concert stages.

Thursdays, 8pm – 10pm
Maestri
with host Oskar Zybart
The terms “maestro” and “maestra” have long been applied to great individuals in music—those with a particular gift for composition, performance, or conducting. History is rich with such talents, though some are better known than others. Each week on CKUA, we take a detailed dive into the career and catalogue of a single exceptional subject. From the Middle Ages to the present day, across boundaries and borders, there’s always more to explore.
