Calgary’s Jiajia Li is praised as “one of the city’s finest and most adventurous flautists.” Her incredible musical journey has included appearances with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, shows with the experimental concert series Bug Incision, directing a traditional Chinese ensemble, and forming her latest pop band, Ginger Beef.
As part of Lunar New Year celebrations, Li is host an evening of diverse musical programming at the National Music Centre’s Studio Bell. Hop In! A Concert to Celebrate the Year of the Rabbit features Calgary’s Kensington Sinfonia Quintet, Kainai singer Olivia Tailfeathers, and the eclectic Chinese group Gailan Ensemble. Audiences will hear music from the past reinvented and reinterpreted over generations, as well as new music.
CKUA’s Senior Producer Jasmine Vickaryous speaks with Li about the celebration, and what Chinese New Year’s means to her.
