Celeigh Cardinal has a new album, Boundless Possibilities, and she’ll be in conversation with CKUA’s Terry David Mulligan during Mulligan Stew on Saturday, June 22.
The Alberta singer-songwriter has a powerful voice that has always captivated audiences. Her new album, however, holds significant pain, and no small measure of vulnerability. Cardinal was deep in creative work, and already singing some of the album’s songs in live shows, when her world was rocked by two heartbreaking losses. Her son’s father was murdered, and another friend took her own life.
Cardinal has explored themes of love and sorrow before, but she says that this album “swims deeper.”
Mulligan did not hesitate to ask Cardinal how these losses affected her. “This is not an easy conversation. It’s tough to sing about this stuff, and it can be even tougher to explain such a deep thing. But we can’t skate over it.”
Some of Mulligan’s questions are about healing, and whether it’s possible to emerge from such grief with any measure of joy. He says, “One of the things I wanted to ask, is ‘Are you happy? Is it possible to be happy?’ Her answer is remarkable, and people will want to tune in to hear it.”
It’s fair to say that both Cardinal and Mulligan believe in the power of music to heal, but that doesn’t mean that the path is easy or smooth. Mulligan says, “Celeigh answers questions about pain and loss, and she’s not afraid to analyse herself and her heart. She’s been able to find joy in living, and in raising her son.”
Cardinal also speaks about her time as a CKUA host, when she curated a program called Full Circle between 2019 and 2022. Mulligan notes that this immersive musical experience “had a profound effect on her as a songwriter.”
