Robson Maurice, shaking things up

Robson Maurice has always been a rebellious spirit with music. First he broke off from his family’s musical focus (singing) to play the drums. Growing up and working in Montreal, the Haitian artist now operates in Calgary, where he continues to stir things up. Keeping busy as a drummer, music teacher, and entrepreneur, he has most notably created the Key 30 Orchestra, a modern classical gathering of professional musicians.

“We play what I call ‘classical soul,’ a mixture of classical music and soul music, and all original compositions,” says Robson.

“Classical soul is not really the style of soul music but more so what soul is really about – people’s experiences and people’s mindsets and people’s cultures.” It embodies different backgrounds, he says, from African music to North American gospel and Caribbean styles.

The Key 30 Orchestra, which began in 2018, is an independent, multicultural orchestra made of artists from diverse backgrounds and musical training.

Part of the idea behind the orchestra was bringing people together for open, honest dialogue, he says.

“I wanted to create a space like that where you could speak your mind, with respect. It’s challenging to bring that kind of space together but to see people willing, open, having tough conversations, I think it’s so important.”

As musicians, their job is to uplift as well as to create open discussion, he says. “We want to showcase love as much as we want to stay honest.”

A live concert album is in the works and Robson says he’s excited about what’s to come for the group, including more concerts and exclusive, members-only musical events. Keep an eye on Robson’s website to see what’s coming.
