JAMuary: Dan and Susan Carberry

Story

When Dan and Susan Carberry returned to Alberta after decades away, they gained a new appreciation for CKUA. “We lived in Edmonton in the 80s, and back then we gave what we could. In 1995 we moved to BC for 22 years, and we missed CKUA. As soon as we found CKUA.com, that was it. Streaming changed everything. And then we moved back to Alberta in 2017. We’ve been monthly donors ever since.”

Now retired in Cochrane, Dan and Susan say that their connection to the arts is a key reason for the support they offer CKUA. “I’m a retired drama teacher,” says Susan. “My former students are out there, and some of them are trying to make a living in the arts. The interviews and the programming CKUA offers encourages people who work in the arts. Donating to CKUA is one way we can ensure those who create are supported. And of course we love the music, too.”

She adds, “Our daughter & son-in-law, Sheena and Jesse Hollis, have become monthly donors, too. We have passed on the responsibility to support CKUA to the next generation. Our two young grandsons are also music lovers. So there is hope well into the second century of CKUA!”

Susan doesn’t mince words when she speaks about the positive impact music provides. “Music keeps us centered. It eases anxiety; it revives old memories and energizes us when we’re feeling low. The CKUA hosts have become friends in a way, and we look forward to hearing them each time they are on the air.”

When asked for a “jam,” Susan suggested something from the soundtrack of The Air Up There, a 1994 comedy starring Kevin Bacon and Charles Gitonga Maina.

Thank you, Dan and Susan!
