All of us at CKUA were deeply saddened to hear about the death of Ian Tyson on December 29, 2022. His influence as a songwriter, performer, and collaborator is unsurpassed, and he will be remembered fondly by fans, fellow musicians, and many friends. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Over the past week, we’ve heard Ian’s music in new ways as we listen to his songs about Alberta, cowboys, ranching, and life. Various CKUA hosts will include tributes to Ian Tyson in their upcoming programs. Check back here often to learn more as plans develop.
Wide Cut Country – 10am MT, Jan 7 (available OnDemand until January 13) Jan Tyson and Corb Lund’s Longview interview, 2016. Hear tunes that were recorded live when these two artists chatted with Allison Brock.
This Music Changed My Life – 1pm MT, Jan 7 (available OnDemand until January 13) Shayne Giles will discuss the legacy of Ian Tyson and his influence on This Music Changed My Life. They’ll share clips of Ian, and others speaking about the late singer’s work.
Folk Routes – 11am MT, Jan 8 (available OnDemand until January 14) The entire first hour of the January 8 episode of Folk Routes will be a tribute to Ian Tyson. Tom Coxworth shares the music, the words, and the spirit that guided the songs we all know and love.
Far Out – 6pm MT, Jan 11 – Amy Van Keeken will share music from 1969’s Great Speckled Bird album, and some Ian & Sylvia content from the album Nashville.
