“Poetry is like a sixth sense; it’s how I explore the world around me and how I find my place in it.” – Shone Thistle
Calgary-based multidisciplinary artist and writer Shone Thistle is Calgary’s new Poet Laureate for 2024-2026. Shone’s catalogue of works hosts an impressive variety of mediums and disciplines, including radio and jazz ensemble, festival and keynote speaking, inner-city cabaret, and various gallery exhibitions and installations. Shone is also an accomplished competitor in the poetry circuit, having achieved perfect scores at the renowned Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
In addition to their accomplished career as a writer and speaker, Shone is also the Executive Director of the Calgary Queer Arts Society. In their new role as Calgary’s Poet Laureate, Shone will continue the tradition of civic event presentations and producing their own literary works.
Shone Thistle joined CKUA’s Lisa Wilton on Traffic Jams to discuss the role of Poet Laureate and the importance of poetry in their own life.
