On Film: Alberta’s Indigenous Film History

Interview

It’s like a portal into Alberta’s Indigenous history…

Taking us all the way back a century in time, thanks to an unlikely source: Old Hollywood. Mary Graham is a Calgary-based writer who will be presenting a virtual talk on Friday March 19, 2021, called The People of the Mountains and the Movie Makers. She’s one of the speakers taking part in the University of Calgary’s 13th annual Chiniki Lecture in First Nations History, Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 PM (MT). The contact for registration is Jessica Tannenbaum: jessica.tannenbaum@ucalgary.ca

At 8:45 AM (MT), Mary will tell us about the under appreciated history of the Stoney Nakota people’s involvement in the early film industry, and what these century-old Alberta-made Hollywood films have to tell us all in 2021.
