Cirque Du Soleil inspires mural in Calgary

A “whimsical and surrealist” new mural is taking shape in Downtown Calgary this month as part of the 2023 BUMP Festival. Created by Toronto-based muralist and illustrator Kayla Buium a.k.a. Milkbox, the eye-popping outdoor art piece is inspired by the Cirque du Soleil production Kooza.

Originally staged in 2007, Kooza goes back to Cirque du Soleil’s roots, blending jaw-dropping acrobatics and eye-popping costumes and sets with entertaining clowning. The production is on now under the Big Top at Calgary’s Stampede Park until October 8, 2023.

Kayla joined CKUA’s Scott Zielsdorf this week to talk about encapsulating the energy and excitement of Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza in mural form.
