Wendy Walker

Wendy Walker is Metis originally from Winnipeg Manitoba. Her Metis Roots extend to the Red River Metis Settlement of long ago.

Ms. Walker has made Calgary Region 3/ Treaty 7 (Alberta) her home for many years. Wendy is an established Singer songwriter and has been a recognized Indigenous Artist for many years now.

Wendy Walker has been nominated for awards for her work as an Indigenous Singer-song-writer. 2023 saw her being nominated for a YYC Music Award. She was recently recognized in the Alberta Legislature by ALL government members of the house for her work in the arts and in particular, Music.

Wendy was one of two Indigenous Artists selected from Canada to performance at the 2018 Olympic Cultural Festival in PeyongChang South Korea. Her short but very successful tour was extremely well received and was shown on Korean Television. Calgary then Mayor Nahed Nenshi and Deputy Premier Sarah Hoffman along with the Alberta Delegation attended one of their shows and they loved it. Nahed messaged back to Calgary “She’s killing it!”

Wendy Walkers last single was released Oct. 31,2023 Fly, Like a Butterfly (a collaboration with Jazz Collective CWP (Calgary Without Patriarchy)

2022 called And the Children, which can be found on Band Camp. The song talks about the children who didn’t come home from Residential school. Her father was a survivor and her mother went to an institution for TB, even though she didn’t have it but her family did. She has released to previous albums She’s A Warrior and Onelight. In 2005 she toured parts of the United States and Europe promoting Onelight; which she was able to get into 39 countries.

Her artistic quest knowledge in other genres such as Theatre saw her in 2021 take on the Role of a French speaking Kohkum in How to Make a Metis. In the early 2000’s she wrote directed, acted in and produced a one act play How the West… Was Met. She has hosted APTN’S Profiles of Success which profiled successful Indigenous Peoples in Business. Wendy landed one of the lead Roles in the feature film How to Marry a Ghost directed by Sandra Sawatsky

A Friend Like Coyote a short film released 2023 and is being considered by Cannes, Tribeca and TIFF Film Festivals in which she co-wrote, co-directed and took on the role of Coyote. Wendy also the majority of the music score. This was her first short film which has now been submitted to Sundance, Cannes, Tribeca and TIFF Film Festivals

2022 also saw Wendy represent Metis in an Indigenous App, she sang O My Metis in it.

Wendy teaches on line with Connected North to a variety of Indigenous Students in remote areas of Canada in the areas of Indigenous Music, Story telling and Song writing

Currently she is getting to record and release a new single from her Film A Friend Like Coyote …And she is teaching a song-writing program at The Women’s Centre in Calgary.

This year in partnership with a Jazz Collective CWP, they have recorded one of Wendy’s Songs Fly, Like a Butterfly which is in the process of being released.
