Premiere of New Work by Johnny Summers, Featuring special guest Japanese drum ensemble, Midnight Taiko & the Marvelous Music of Mr. Mingus

Infusing jazz orchestra and taiko drums, experience the visual and powerful Premiere work by Johnny Summers, bringing together the CJO and special guest Japanese Drum Ensemble, Midnight Taiko. Immerse yourself in the marvelous music of Charles Mingus, known for energetic, powerful rhythms, soul-filling grooves, and melodies.

The show’s first half will be energetic as the Calgary Jazz Orchestra takes the stage to perform music from the legendary bassist, composer, and band leader Charles Mingus. His music is a soulful blend of gospel and blues roots, infused with melodies and rhythm that draw everyone in.

The show’s second half features something that has never been done before – a suite for taiko drums and jazz orchestra. The Midnight Taiko Drum Ensemble and Calgary Jazz Orchestra will collaborate on stage to bring you the Premiere suite by Johnny Summers, fusing the Japanese and jazz music traditions.
