Your Vacation Stories on Thoroughfare

News

CKUA wants to know what your summer fun has been. Have you traveled near (Wabamun) or far (Italy)? Have you welcomed guests? Maybe you had a big family reunion for the first time in three years.

This summer, Tony King journeyed from the Atlantic to the Pacific and enjoyed a little magic along the way. The magic did not include three flight delays, one change in aircraft, many oppressive line-ups, and four ferry rides! Tune in as he shares a few of his stories on August 12th’s Thoroughfare.

And it’s not too late to add your own vacation stories into the mix! Don’t be shy; tell us about your summer adventures through words, pictures, or anecdotes, and while you’re at it, pair them with a music request sent to feedback@ckua.com.

Then tune in to the soundtrack of your summer vacation, Friday, August 12 on CKUA.

Here are the first two stories:

We should be friends!

At the end of my official vacation to a family wedding in Ontario, I was waiting for my flight at Toronto Pearson. I love to people-watch at the gate. I admired an extremely stylish and extremely pregnant woman. Being snoopy, I also noticed that she had a Ukrainian passport. I thought maybe she was coming as a refugee.

Exactly a week later, I was cycling near Whyte Ave and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the same woman I had admired in Toronto airport, walking alone. I cycled on but decided to take a chance and double back. I pulled up and said “Excuse me, we were on the same flight from Toronto last week!”. She looked as surprised as I felt. She burst out “That’s amazing! We should be friends! … or something…”. Of course I was keen to hear her story about leaving Ukraine, and I invited her to dinner that night, and she came. We talked for hours. Two weeks later, I have a new friend, and I’m an unofficial Aunt. Soon, the other half of that family will arrive from their paperwork limbo, hopefully in time for a summer BBQ.

Summertime Sadness??

Hi Tony, Welcome back! My vacation was spent hosting family here on the Sunshine Coast. It was pretty great as, like most, it’s been 2 and a half years since seeing them.

Living in Alberta, my young niece and nephews (Ages 10, 5, 4 and 9 months) had never seen the ocean before. It was great to be the cool uncle on the west coast. And also cool to meet my youngest nephew for the first time. So many great memories – a golden summer vacation indeed!

The song that came up often was Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey, which honestly, I didn’t understand at first. I was like “C’mon Lana, summer is full of joy and warmth and family and celebration, not sadness!!! What a downer…”

Then my family left for home… and my vacation ended… and then I understood where she was coming from.

The worst part about vacation is when it ends. What a downer…lol
