Uncle Strut: Surf-Inspired

Story

Uncle Strut is a band from BC whose sound has been described as “surf-infused” and “sun-soaked.” Singer/guitarist Tyson McNamara, bassist Simon Tejani, and drummer Quincy Flowers recently welcomed the band’s newest member, guitarist Jasper Matthias.

Uncle Strut is known for being relaxed, and they all needed some of those good vibes recently while on the road. “The first time I played with the band, we got off the ferry and our van broke down,” says Matthias. “We had to push it into the parking lot.”

Flowers says, “It was in the middle of the highway. Jasper’s first experience with the band was having to wave cars out of the way.”

Now the band is touring Canada, and preparing for three shows in Alberta. Their new album, Home At Last, was recorded at Monarch Studios in Vancouver. It blends surf rock sounds with pop and retro vibes. The first single, “Waiting for You,” might just be the perfect indie track to launch us all into Spring and Summer.

One country in particular has a special place in the band’s collective heart. McNamara says, “We all travel, and Australia is like a second home to us. We aren’t necessarily a surf band, but we are surf-inspired.”

Tejani adds, “Australia has been good for us. We have a sneaky audience there. After living in Banff, we met people from all over, and we have a lot of friends in Australia. Going there feels like a hometown tour.”

Whether touring Canada or other parts of the world, the goal is the same. “This is our first tour,” says Flowers, “and now we have 22 dates booked between now and June. We just hope to keep building on that.”

Uncle Strut will play Canmore on March 27, Edmonton on March 28, and Calgary on March 29. Find details and tickets at unclestrut.com
