The Birds are for CKUA: Hazel & Jim Smith’s Listener Story

Do you (or does someone you know) have a 200-300 word story about you and CKUA that you’d like to share with us? Please let us know by writing us. We’d love to feature it! What do such stories look like?

Well, here’s one by longtime CKUA listeners and donors, Hazel and Jim Smith.

Way back, when Bob Chelmick was a regular evening feature on CKUA, I was a new listener, and I was driving home to my farm over country roads when I heard something that didn’t fit with the programming.

The sounds would come and go with some regularity, but seemingly inconsistently. I had a horrible feeling that somehow a bird had become stuck on something under my car, so I pulled over to the edge of the road, got down on my hands and knees, and tried to find the source of the strange noises.

I found nothing, but shortly after getting back on the road, the noises again bothered me. There must be a mechanical problem! Over I pulled to the side of the road again, and once again I got down on my hands and knees and tried to discern what on earth the problem was.

When I finally got home that evening, I exclaimed to my husband, Jim, “I was listening to this incredible host on CKUA. He records from his solar-powered cabin and leaves a mic on the deck so that bird songs are interspersed irregularly throughout his programming!”

Of course, it was a short step from there to Bob becoming our favourite CKUA host and over the years we have become fans of Allison, Lionel, TDM, TDD, Lisa, Kathie, Leroy, Tom, Dianne…

Donate to CKUA as monthly donors? Darned right, we do!

All the best from Hazel & Jim Smith
