When Tom Coxworth looks ahead to a fundraiser live broadcast in CKUA’s Beresh Arts Den, he’s not thinking only about the music. “I’ve requested specialty teas. And my toast of choice is thick butter bread, with good quality butter, and brown sugar and cinnamon on top.”
After Tom puts in his breakfast order, he will take some time to connect with people—those in the room and those listening on the radio. “It’s about talking directly to this community. This ever-growing Sunday morning community that loves folk and Celtic and roots music.”
“The music that we play will be their requests.” And, he laughs, “There’s nothing like the live excitement of being there, with Andy. On the radio, you never know where he’s going to go. You’re kind of on a tightrope.”
Andy Donnelly is looking forward to seeing his longtime friend. “Tom and I keep in touch regularly, but we haven’t seen each other in person at a fundraiser for quite a while.”
He adds, “I’m just looking forward to being a part of it. I’m concentrating on the fundraiser, too. Raising as much money as we can. There’s work to be done!”
One of the goals of the event is to celebrate CKUA’s volunteers, who support CKUA’s work during every fundraiser and throughout the year. Welsh singer-songwriter Martyn Joseph, who’s currently on tour in Canada, will stop by. There may be other guests, too. We’ve got some surprises planned!
Andy says, “It’s all about being together, and spending time together. We always get great support from the listeners and friends. And from the crew at the station. It will be a first-class event.”
It all might be too much excitement for Andy. When we ask him if he’s looking forward to it, he says, “I have not slept for 39 days.”
There’s still room for a few more friends at this event.
Register here so we know how much tea and toast to make. We’d love to see you!
