T. Buckley: True to Style

T. Buckley has a lot of projects on the go, and that makes for a busy summer. From his home base in Calgary, he’ll be heading out on the road to play Alberta festivals and shows in August, before dipping down into Montana for a showcase there.

He’s just released a single of a John Hiatt song called “Dust Down a Country Road.” It’s a sweet, melodic song that features musicians Buckley has worked with before. “A lot of the time, these days, I do a trio-type thing, bluegrass inspired. I’m on guitar and harmonica. Mitch Jay plays dobro and banjo, and Jesse Dollimont plays mandolin and guitar.”

Buckley says the group likes to play and record as a true acoustic trio, often gathered around one microphone. “That John Hiatt song is an accurate representation of how we sound,” he says. “We recorded it live, with three-part harmony.”

When asked if the trio might be a good fit to play at a bluegrass festival, Buckley seems open to the idea. “The instrumentation and presentation are true to the old organic bluegrass style,” he says. “There’s no amplification.”

Buckley enjoys working on a variety of musical projects at once. The Woodshed, a duo he’s formed with friend and fellow musician John Wort Hannam is pure joy. “We both sing and play,” says Buckley, “so it’s a fun collaboration.” The name The Woodshed refers to the beginning of Buckley and Hannam’s collaboration—woodshedding songs together during a residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in 2017.

As he prepares to put out a new album in 2025, Buckley invites people to stay tuned, noting, “I’ll be in touring the province in the fall.”

T. Buckley and Jesse Dollimont will play in Sherwood Park on August 14, as part of the 27th Annual Qualico Patio Series. Find info at festivalplace.ca
