From January through April 2024, Kai Salzl worked at CKUA, in a practicum placement for his Radio and Television Studies at NAIT. We caught up with Kai to learn a little more about him, and find out what’s next as he completes his studies.
“The program teaches you how to be on the air, and it can also be a foot in the door of the industry,” he says. “We learn audio production, filming techniques, and what makes a good break. It’s useful stuff, no matter what path in the industry we choose.”
When asked how he came to be “matched ” with CKUA for his practicum, Kai says it was pretty straightforward. “We have some choice about where we want to go. CKUA has always been one of my favourite stations, so I got in touch. ”
Kai is particularly interested in voice work. “I was listening to a podcast from a voice actor on one of my favourite video games, and he mentioned that he got his start in radio. Then I saw a presentation on voice acting at Centre High. So I think I will use my audio production skills to make a really good demo, and hope for the best.”
He says he’s enjoyed his practicum at CKUA. “It’s been a lot of fun. I have been doing more than I expected to, and I’ve been able to do a lot of different things. I’m really grateful for the time here.”
Thanks, Kai! We’ll watch for you—and listen for your voice—as you begin your new career.
