The nights are getting darker. As a chill creeps through the October air, CKUA hosts are brewing up something special for Halloween!
From haunted folk ballads to bluesy tales of bad luck, listeners can expect a musical journey through the supernatural.
For The Wild Card, host Jasmine Vickaryous is diving deep into the darker corners of Americana and folk.
“I’ve always loved Halloween,” she says. ”It’s one of those nights where the line between fun and eerie gets blurred. Music captures that feeling perfectly.”
Her Halloween show will offer a slightly haunted atmosphere, the perfect soundtrack whether you’re handing out candy or wandering through the night fog.
Get ready for ghostly storytelling from Johnny Cash’s “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” the gothic twang of Orville Peck’s “Dead of Night” and the shiver-inducing blues of Colter Wall’s “The Devil Wears a Suit and Tie.”
On Wax & Wane, host Joe Hartfeil is embracing the full spirit of the season. “Halloween is my personal favourite holiday,” he says. “It’s the time to pull out all the stops.”
Hartfeil’s playlist will include “songs about history’s great monsters and various non-Dracula vampire types. Witches, wolves, the usual.”
He says he’s aiming to create “a sense of the dance between the sacred and the profane.” Listeners can expect to hear Jennifer Castle’s “Grim Reaper,” Hermitess’ “Vampires,” and Philly Joe Jones’ “Trick Street.”
And when it comes to the blues, Cam Hayden, host of Friday Night Blues Party will have everyone dancing off their Halloween sugar high.
“The blues is full of stories of superstition and bad luck,” he says. His Halloween playlist is packed with dark musical delights. From Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” to Dr. John’s “I Walk on Gilded Splinters.” Expect tales of haunted houses, a voodoo boogie, and even a few black cats along the way.
No matter how you celebrate, this Halloween CKUA hosts promise to stir the spirits and maybe even raise a few goosebumps too!
