Residency’s new host is Birdy Loughlin

Story

Have you caught our unique and ever-changing show, Residency? This hour-long program features fresh programming from new voices and special guests. It follows Friday Night Blues Party, airing midnight – 1am MT on Saturdays.

Starting on July 26, our summer student, Birdy Loughlin, will launch their program, Duet.

Birdy is spending the summer working as a production assistant in our Calgary studio. A student at the Alberta University of the Arts (AUArts,) they are focused on sculpture, including community-minded installations.

While they have co-hosted before on friends’ shows at CJSW, this will be Loughlin’s first solo show.

“I’m really excited,” they say. “I do a lot of curation in terms of fine arts, I organize a lot of shows and exhibitions and this feels like another branch of that. I’m really looking forward to being able to curate music and broadcast it to a public audience. It’s pretty surreal.”

Duet is going to be a wide-ranging adventure.

“It is going to start in folk and bluegrass where duet traditions are very rich, but the show itself isn’t going to be limited to genre,” says Loughlin.

“It’s really about interplay, contrasts and connection. I’m trying to explore the idea of collaboration and duality in all of its forms: musical, conversational, structural,” they say. “So genre is a tool but it’s not a boundary.”

This could include conversations where Loughlin picks a song and someone else picks a complementary song and they discuss it. Or perhaps someone else picking two songs and sharing the connection between the two.

“Whether or not they’re literally addressed as happening as a duet, there is going to be this internal duetting that happens,” Loughlin says.

It could also include exploring A sides and B sides of the same album. They’re also interested in looking at mashups and sampling and how two parts come together.

Loughlin says it’s been a special experience so far, getting to be a part of CKUA.

“I’ve been listening for a long time so it was really nice to see how authentic it really is, with the connections between people at the station and then throughout Alberta. They are solid and real and that is awesome to see.”

Tune in to hear Birdy Loughlin, the newest host of Residency. Their program, Duet, will air for eight weeks starting Saturday, July 26, midnight – 1am MT.
