This has been an especially exciting 50/50 raffle for CKUA as it was the first time we collaborated with KDays in Edmonton. Over the 10 days of the event, we had volunteers roaming around, selling 50/50 tickets. Ten days of volunteer shifts means a lot of volunteers! We needed to recruit 150 people.
Karen Howell, CKUA Events and Volunteer Coordinator, says it was gratifying to see the community step up.
“We knew we were setting an ambitious target at 150 volunteers,” she says. “But we had a phenomenal outpouring of support and our final count was 180.”
One special part was that so many new volunteers answered the call.
“Many were already volunteers with CKUA, stepping up yet again to support the station any way they could. But most were brand new to CKUA, and some had never heard of us,” says Howell. “They saw the call for recruitment on social media and got in touch. One volunteer told me they started listening to CKUA for the first time, and after a week, loved everything they’d heard.”
The teenage contingent also brought some great energy. “We were thrilled to welcome a number of high school students who brought friends for their subsequent shifts,” Howell says.
The collaboration made for a special opportunity to welcome new members to the CKUA family.
“To see our community expand in such a huge way, and to see all the smiling faces on the midway, all the CKUA shirts and happy volunteers, was inspiring,” says Howell. “We met some folks who had rekindled long-ago connections with CKUA, who had worked at the station years ago. We met KDays staff who came to our table to tell us how much they loved CKUA.”
Overall, working with KDays was a beautiful chance to come together and raise money for radio that matters. We also introduced the CKUA Stage, which hosted some spectacular shows, including The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer and Shakura S’aida.
“It was 10 days of celebrating community, not just the CKUA family but all the ways that CKUA brings meaning to people’s lives,” says Howell.
With the support of listeners like you, the jackpot will grow and will be split between CKUA and one lucky winner. Sales end at 11:59pm MT on Thursday, July 31. There are multiple ticket packages available. Tickets may be purchased only within Alberta.
