CKUA’s new line of summertime merch is out!
It’s an exciting, unique collection featuring everything from jaunty dancing boomboxes to a whimsical, otherworldly creation by Calgary artist Chad VanGaalen.
“The inspiration was to represent the vibrancy and the colourful, eclectic nature of all of the music and art and the programming presented by CKUA,” says Ryan Rathjen, CKUA marketing coordinator. “It’s tying in to that, with a fun, bright summertime element.”
In addition to the T-shirts, hats, hoodies and mugs already available, now CKUA fans can find new shirts and tote bags on our online store.
“It’s fun to create garments that people will hopefully cherish,” says Rathjen. “It’s always the goal to create someone’s favourite shirt or hat.”

“I know how I feel about my clothes and I love having those staple items that you wear until the day you wear it out. And it’s another way for people to show their pride in CKUA, that they align with it, that they support it.”
The work by VanGaalen follows last year’s summertime creation by artist Cory Bugden.
“It’s the second year we’ve done the artist series,” says Rathjen. “It’s a cool project, asking someone to create their interpretation of art inspired by CKUA. Chad is a visual artist, a musician, and an animator. He’s also an artist who we play on CKUA so it seemed like a natural fit.”
“I think opening up the opportunity for artists to express themselves and create art that inspires them represents what CKUA is all about: uplifting artists from around Alberta and allowing them a platform to present something that they’re proud of and excited about.”
CKUA staff asked local up-and-coming artists to serve as models for a photoshoot showing off the new line. Edmonton singer-songwriter Mattea was one of them.

“I think the new merch is super rad,” she says. “A graphic tee is always a welcome piece in my closet, and they have this awesome nostalgic 90’s vibe, gives you the warm and fuzzies.”
“I specifically loved the brown tee!” she says. “I feel like you don’t often see a tee in brown. The deep brown/chocolate colour is just delicious.”
Mattea says she sees the inherent value in CKUA’s work.
“Community is so important, and I admire the way CKUA constantly uplifts and platforms local artists and creates a common space for us to connect.”
