We hope you are enjoying Residency. This hour-long program features fresh multi-genre programming from new voices and special guests. It follows Friday Night Blues Party, airing midnight – 1am MT on Saturdays.
We’ve had four Residency hosts so far. They’ve shared music ranging from jazz to folk, hip-hop to funk. Now it’s time to welcome our next host! On May 31, Bronson Kashino will introduce his program, The Breaks.
Kashino is in the midst of a practicum placement at CKUA. He’s a NAIT Radio & Television student, and will be working with the Content team on a variety of projects, including CKUA Summer festival coverage.
He laughs about how he came to be Residency‘s newest host. “I originally thought I would be focused on production, putting together pre-recorded audio elements.”
When Open Nights host Mark Rodgers invited him to consider hosting Residency, Kashino jumped at the chance. He put together an idea for a show, pitched it to Senior Producer Jasmine Vickaryous, and it all came together quickly.
Sample-based music will be at the core of The Breaks. “I’ll play a bunch of sample-based music,” says Kashino, “and then I’ll pull one of the tracks out of the line. We can see how this song was made by sampling another song. You can hear the original and the new version of it.”
Sampling has existed before samplers were invented, notes Kashino. “Think about jazz. Musicians quote each other, or use sections of another artist’s music.”
He mentions George Clinton from the collective Parliament Funkadelic as an example of someone who shares his music generously. Kashino says, “When people ask George Clinton how much it will cost to use a part of his song, he says, ‘It’s free.’ His thought is that it extends the legacy of his music. People decades later will know that it is a George Clinton lick.”
Samples are most common in hip-hop, but Kashino says sampling happens in jazz, soul, rock, and almost any style of music you can think of. Expect true variety during The Breaks!
“I want to present the samples in ways that make people hear music in new ways. The way that music is made can lead to so many different rabbit holes!”
