When CKUA listener Conrad N. picked up the phone during a hectic August morning, he never imagined the call would make him $170,000 richer.
In fact, Conrad had already spent most of his morning on the phone. His wallet had just been stolen during a family road trip, and he was busy canceling credit cards and speaking with the bank when a call came in from CKUA.
“When I learned we won the CKUA 50/50 I was so excited, I don’t think I have the words to express it,” he recalls. “Erin and I confirmed the ticket number and my wife and I hugged each other and shed a few tears in shock. We still can’t believe it.”
Conrad N. lives in Lethbridge with his wife, two boys, and a dog “who needs never get old.” For the last 20 years, he has worked as a carpenter for the railroad, maintaining train tracks across the province.
No matter the worksite, the sound of a radio has been a constant presence in his day-to-day life. But nearly a decade ago, he found himself tired of hearing the same songs on repeat.
“I scanned my way to CKUA and have had it as #1 on my presets ever since. Fantastic radio made possible by the talented and passionate people responsible for what we hear and how we hear it—thanks again!”
As for plans for the prize, Conrad and his family are balancing practicality with adventure. “The first thing we will buy with this money is more 50/50 tickets from CKUA! Second thing will be the typical boring bills.” Long-term, Conrad intends to invest most of the winnings so his family can continue travelling together for years to come.
It won’t all be boring, though, according to Conrad: “After that, we need to reward our oldest son for his patience, negotiation skills, and determination to save his money since he was five for a trip to Legoland.”
For Conrad N., supporting CKUA through ticket purchases was an easy decision.
