L-R: CKUA COO Adam Mitchell, host Allison Brock, winner Curtis

Meet our most recent CKUA 50/50 Raffle winner! Curtis from Shaugnessy, AB, won $140,697.

“I’d been waiting for the call every raffle,” he says, of receiving the news. “It’s beyond fantastic.”

Plans for his prize include a very special trip. Curtis’ wife is from Ghana and they were married there in 1988. It’s been over 30 years since they’ve been back together. Now they’re planning a trip there with their adult children.

Another plan? A garage.

“I’ve always wanted a garage, I never had one, all my life,” Curtis says. An artistic soul with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, he has been waiting for a long time to get back to oil painting. “Basically, with the family I had to work all the time to support them but now I’m retired. I just need the space and the supplies.”

Curtis’ connection to CKUA goes back to a Saturday afternoon in 1985. He was in a used bookstore in Medicine Hat. They had blues playing on the radio so he asked what station it was. It was CKUA. “I got enlightened,” he says, “and never looked back. Basically, you can’t beat the music, the voices, and the stories they’ve got to tell.”

On the CKUA side, we love having the chance to change someone’s life.

“Calling a CKUA listener to let them know they’ve just won over $100,000 in our 50/50 is one of the most joyful and cup-filling things we get to do,” says Adam Mitchell, CKUA’s Chief Operating Officer. “It’s a full-circle moment. Our community gives so generously, and once in a while, we get to give something huge back.

And CKUA raffles are not just about one person winning a life-changing sum. Our raffles are a crucial part of CKUA’s ongoing fundraising. Listener donations, advertising and sponsorship support 70% of CKUA’s operations. Our half of the raffle win helps CKUA continue its good work.

CKUA’s newest 50/50 raffle is on now! Get your tickets before 11:59pm MT on June 5. Draw date is June 9.

“All I can say is, I’ll be one of the first people buying tickets again for this raffle,” says Curtis.

“I encourage people to buy tickets to support the station. And to support the station with its other fundraisers too. It goes without saying that it’s the best radio station in Alberta and probably in Canada too.”
