Meet our 50-50 Raffle winner!

Story

When Julie S. from Edmonton received the news that she had won over $150,000 in CKUA’s latest 50-50 Raffle, she didn’t believe it.

“I wasn’t quite sure if it was serious or maybe a joke of some kind,” she says. “It really was surreal.”

How did she feel once the news set in? “Extremely fortunate,” she says. “Really lucky.”

“You buy a ticket and you think, ‘I’m supporting CKUA, that’s fun.’ And on the very, very rare chance that you might be a winner, that might be fun too but you really don’t expect it.”

As exciting as the news was, “I’m being very mindful and restrained, just trying to let it process,” she says, adding, “I’m sure a holiday somewhere will be in order.”

Julie also plans to contribute to causes close to her heart with the additional $150,765 now in her bank account. “There are some not-for-profits and charities I’d like to give back to,” she says. “And the horrible situation in Jasper; I’d like to top up some donations I made for that.”

She also has a neat idea percolating. “I thought it might be fun to give back to CKUA, and fun for me, to maybe do a donated hour of programming.”

Julie, an avid lover of theatre and music, has been a CKUA listener for over 20 years.

She can’t pick a favourite show. “It’s impossible,” she says. “That’s one of the joys of CKUA: every time you turn on the radio there’s a phenomenal program on.”

It never disappoints, she says. “You get introduced to a new artist or a new song or a new genre of music that you hadn’t been exposed to before. That’s the power of CKUA, it just connects everybody.”

“I’m just grateful to CKUA for existing,” she says. She says the 50-50 Raffles are a fun way to support the work CKUA does. “All it takes is one ticket and you can support CKUA and potentially win a 50-50.”

If you love CKUA, it’s important to give back, says Julie. “These are such precarious times we’re living in. If you believe in something and you enjoy something, you should support it, to help it grow and live, help it survive.”
