The CKUA Radio Foundation welcomed incoming Board members Susan Babcock, Emilie LeBel, and Chris Bourassa at CKUA’s Annual General Meeting this February.
Susan Babcock is a consultant and former University of Alberta administrator with more than 30 years’ experience in governance and research leadership, including shaping and directing the Research Ethics Office. She has served on national ethics boards and currently sits on the Edmonton Blues Hall of Fame Foundation Board. A longtime CKUA listener and supporter, she says she can’t remember when CKUA wasn’t the soundtrack to her day — and is proud to give back to the station she loves.
“I have been a listener and a donor for a long time and this is another way to give back to CKUA and to our musical and artistic community,” Babcock says. “CKUA makes my life richer and it is a pleasure to be asked to help keep it strong and vibrant.”
Based in Calgary, Chris Bourassa brings nearly 40 years of experience in real estate development across North America, leading community-focused projects and advising organizations on governance and growth. A long-standing advocate for sustainable, culturally vibrant communities, he holds advanced studies in real estate and business. A devoted CKUA listener since the early 1990s, Chris and his family believe music and the arts are essential to thriving communities and are proud to support CKUA’s enduring impact.
“For more than 35 years, CKUA has been part of my life. What began as a casual recommendation became a lifelong connection,” says Bourassa. “Serving on the Board feels like a natural way to give back to an institution that has given so much to so many.”
Edmonton composer Emilie LeBel has spent the past two decades immersed in various streams of music from orchestral work to intermedia productions. She is the Associate Professor and Head of Composition at MacEwan University, as well as Composer Advisor to the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. A dedicated CKUA listener and supporter since moving to Alberta in 2018, Emilie believes music builds community and is thrilled to join CKUA in championing diverse artistic voices.
“CKUA has been an important part of my daily life since arriving in Edmonton,” LaBel explains. “I wanted to support something that has given such much to me, and the local arts community.”
