We love hearing stories of intergenerational listeners—families who enjoy CKUA together, or kids who listen because of their parents’ influence.
Meet Leia Brewer and Doug Neuman. This Morinville couple will tell you that their connections to CKUA can be traced back to Leia’s parents, Elsie McGowan and Garry Brewer.
Doug says, “Leia has been listening to CKUA since the day she was born, and I have been listening since Leia and I got serious in 2008! I had heard of CKUA and was aware of it, but I didn’t realize what a gem it is until it became the station in our car and in our house.”
Doug is a huge fan of The Dirty Windshields Radio Hour and Lionel’s Vinyls; Leia loves Wide Cut Country. On Saturdays they keep CKUA on throughout the day.
They started donating not long after they started listening. “When we got together, we were a broke young couple, so we appreciated the generosity of other donors, to support this unique programming.”
Doug guesses that their first donation was probably $10 per month, back in the day. “Now as we’ve gotten older and bit more established, we’ve increased that over the years.”
This year, their giving took on a different tone and focus when they donated an hour in memory of Leia’s parents. “Elsie had CKUA on in the kitchen, probably every day,” says Doug. “Garry was a musician who played in a number of bands. They loved music and they wanted their kids to love music.”
Doug says, “Support for CKUA isn’t just support for the radio station and for the music. It’s a meaningful way to support all the artists. There are so many artists that you hear on CKUA that you will not hear on any other radio station in Alberta. Supporting CKUA helps artists who are trying to break through.”
He also mentions CKUA’s connections to Alberta’s wider arts sector. “If you love Folk Fest, if you love North Country Fair, CKUA’s support of these festivals is important. It’s about having that scene, that community. Supporting CKUA is supporting every arts platform in the whole province.”
Thank you, Leia and Doug, for your support, and for your kind words about the role CKUA plays in the province! We appreciate the generosity of each CKUA listener so much.
