Meet Donor Michele Falla: “Fundraiser Is Important”

Community Profiles

Michele Falla is a Calgary donor who has supported CKUA for more than a decade. She found CKUA the way many listeners do—she was station flipping on her radio dial. “I was having a hard time finding classical music, and then I heard Mark Antonelli,” she says. “After that, I just kept coming back.”

She’s now a Leadership Donor who also supports CKUA with donated hours. She jokes that her biggest challenge is deciding which program to choose for those donated hours!

“CKUA is on all the time,” she says, noting that she has donated hours during takahki with Marek Tyler and A Time for Jazz with Kodi Hutchinson. “The jazz on Thursday nights is so good,” she says, mentioning both Hutchinson and Jeff Kynoch as hosts whose programming appeals to her. “Some of it is way out there. I know old jazz, from people like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong. So to hear the fresh stuff that Kodi and Jeff present is so cool.”

Falla describes CKUA as a source of musical discovery, and adds, “I even take notes! When I hear something, I write it down. And I check out the playlist.”

“Fundraiser is important, because it costs money to do what CKUA does,” says Falla. “I stream CKUA at work, and I love the OnDemand feature. The more I listened, the more I realized it was like a streaming service that I should play for. Why wouldn’t I donate to something that I enjoy so much?”

“And the commercials I get are useful,” she adds, noting that when it was time to have the furnace in her home replaced, she chose Horizon Heating, a longtime CKUA sponsor. “These are local people. Community companies. To me, that is important.”
“If you’re listening on a regular basis, I would recommend donating. I didn’t find it difficult to do. It’s so easy to donate, to set up a monthly gift. And it’s important to keep something that’s local. The music is always fresh.”

When asked for a musical suggestion to send out to the CKUA community, Falla recommends something by Jamaican-American jazz pianist Monty Alexander, saying, “The first time I heard of him was on Kodi’s show.”

Thank you for your ongoing support of CKUA, Michele! Your donations are so important and so appreciated.
