Across Alberta and around the world, people give to CKUA because it makes a difference in their lives. For Grande Prairie’s Laurie Fisher, that difference has been profound.
Laurie has been tuning in to CKUA since the mid-1990s, when she was starting her career as a clinical social worker in Grande Prairie. She still remembers stumbling across the station while picking Saskatoon berries.
“I was absolutely blown away. I’m a classically trained musician and you didn’t hear classical music on the radio. I heard it and it was like ‘wow, I like this!’”

For Laurie, music is more than just part of the background of her day-to-day. CKUA quickly became a source of discovery and stimulation. “You actually find yourself listening to it. Any other radio station, it’s just on in the background.”
As far as her favourite programs go, Laurie gravitates to CKUA’s classical offerings, with Aaron Au’s Classical Connections on Saturday mornings as her top pick. But she also enjoys the variety of styles on our airwaves, from bluegrass to folk. As she puts it: “The music is sophisticated[…] it’s thoughtful, it’s well done, it’s different. That appeals to me because I don’t like listening to the same things over and over again.”
Laurie has been a proud CKUA donor for years, and her reason for donating is simple: “If you listen, then you need to donate. That’s just the bottom line. If you use the service, support it; that’s why I give.”
Thank you, Laurie, for your support, and for your kind words about the role CKUA plays in your life! We appreciate the generosity of each CKUA listener so much.
