On the Friday, April 3 edition of Wax & Wane, from 7pm to 9pm MT, CKUA will proudly welcome singer-songwriter Kue Varo, the newest addition to our on-air community!

Born in Nanton, Alberta, Kue Varo made waves fronting Calgary psych-rock groups The Heirlooms and Mister and Mystic before pursuing a solo career in Montreal. They’ve been back in Alberta since 2023, releasing Cowboy Witchcraft, a perennial #1 on CKUA’s Top 30 charts. Their new album, How Everything Feels and Other Lies, comes out this year.

“It doesn’t matter how long or how many times,” Varo says. “I always get excited hearing my music on CKUA. I’m so stoked to pay it forward and bring that to other artists.”

Like many Albertans, Varo’s journey with CKUA started early. “In the café that I grew up working in as a teenager, CKUA was always on in the mornings,” Varo recalls. “Radio’s been such a huge part of my life…there’s sort of a buzz about it, and it just makes me so happy and excited to be a part of it in any capacity.”

Kue Varo will start off as a fill-in host, bringing their talents to numerous slots in CKUA’s on-air schedule in the coming weeks. Their first assignment will be sitting in for Joe Hartfeil on Wax & Wane, a perfect pairing for Varo.

“I was born on a full moon and I might be a bit wild myself, so I think it’ll work out,” Varo says with a laugh. “I’m just hoping to make Joe proud and delight the listeners! I’m approaching this show with an open heart and a whole lot of whimsy.”

Listen to Kue Varo’s CKUA hosting debut on Friday, April 3 starting at 7pm MT.

Save the date! CKUA’s Spring Fundraiser kicks off on Friday, April 17. With the help of donors like you, we can keep bringing new voices like Kue Varo to the Alberta airwaves.
