This Saturday is shaping up to be a special day on CKUA. With interview guests lined up on two of our most popular weekend programs, hosts Holger Petersen and Terry David Mulligan will share music and conversation. It all happens on May 23.
Tune in to Natch’l Blues to hear a conversation with Morgan Davis. Host Holger Petersen welcomed the Canadian blues musician for a wide-ranging conversation about Davis’s long history on the Canadian blues and roots music scene. Morgan Davis has been playing the blues for nearly 60 years, but he’s still making new music as well. This respected artist and songwriter wrote “Why’d You Lie?” for Colin James. Blues fans will want to catch this!
You also won’t want to miss Mulligan Stew. Host Terry David Mulligan will be in conversation with Leeroy Stagger. Stagger’s new album, Pilgrimage, will be released May 29 on Cordova Bay Records. Produced alongside longtime collaborator Joel Plaskett at New Scotland Yard in Dartmouth, NS, the album is a blend of alt-folk, roots, and rock-and-roll with Celtic storytelling influences.
“Everything carries meaning,” says Mulligan when describing Stagger’s work. Stagger asks questions about what kind of world we want to live in, and that comes through in the music.
Some of the songs are about the artist’s family history. “I wanted to write about the Highland clearances of the 1700s,” says Stagger, “which pushed my ancestors from Scotland to Northern Ireland, and ultimately to Nova Scotia, Canada.” Themes of displacement, colonialism, grief and home are present in the music.
Mulligan knows that the friendship between Leeroy Stagger and Joel Plaskett is “deep,” and that the two artists shared a vision for this album. They wanted it to be “hand built by actual humans,” says Mulligan. “I’m very impressed with the music and the production.”
