March 8, International Women’s Day, is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. At CKUA, we will be highlighting the creativity, strength and mastery of women in music, arts and culture. Thursday, March 5
The Upload, guest hosted by Spencer Streichert, 11am – 1pm MT
Spencer is planning on a little “R & R” (Records & Requests), so will be bringing in a ton of femme artists from his record collection in to spin in between the requests.
Thoroughfare, hosted by Tony King, 1pm – 3pm MT
Tony King will be turning the tables on the boys to feature good ol’ Alberta women who embody the rough and ready pastoral landscape of this province. On tap will be music from Mariel Buckley, Lucette, Kaeley Jade and more!
Friday, March 6
Alberta Morning, hosted by Grant Stovel, 6am – 9am MT
Grant will focus on women and guitars, including a visit from the brilliant Mallory Chipman. She’ll tell us about her love for tenor guitars and how an audience member at one of her shows loved her music so much he went home to retrieve his vintage WWII-era Gibson tenor guitar and gave it to her on the spot. She’ll also be telling us about the fact that Gibson guitars from that era, which are particularly prized, were almost entirely manufactured by women.
We’ll also hear from Dr. Sue Foley, who recently earned a PhD in Musicology. She’ll tell us about her Guitar Woman project, including her recent Grammy-nominated Album One Guitar Woman: A Tribute to the Female Pioneers of Guitar.
Plus, we’ll highlight a few cool Alberta events where people can come out to join together in celebrating International Women’s Day weekend!
This Just In, hosted by Amy van Keeken, 9am – 11am MT
The first hour of This Just In will feature an all-women playlist to celebrate International Women’s Day. Featuring new releases from: Kylie Auldist, Fatoumata Diawara, Nana Rizini, Courtney Barnett, Dana Sipos and more.
Traffic Jams, hosted by Lisa Wilton, 3pm – 6pm MT
Lisa will be welcoming CKUA’s newest fill-in host, Kue Varo, to the studio around 4:30pm to chat about their new role. Kue will also share three or four songs by their favourite women/femme artists.
The Wild Card, hosted by Jasmine Vickaryous, 6pm – 7pm MT
Jasmine is dedicating a full hour of The Wild Card to country-ish music powered by women’s voices. We’ll spotlight the trailblazers who paved the way, think Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Linda Martell. Alongside artists making serious waves right now like Amythyst Kiah, Willow Avalon, and Bella White. It’s going to be a barn burner!
Wax & Wane, hosted by Joe Hartfeil, 7pm – 9pm
Joe will be saluting the legions of women whose music haunting, haunted, wayward and wild have graced the air and our ears for years and years, including Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Poison Ivy Rorschach, Hermitess, Mandy Morton, Marisa Nadler and Dorthia Cottrell.
Saturday, March 7
Classical Connections, hosted by Aaron Au, 6am – 8am MT
Aaron will be featuring several female composers and artists, from the incredible music of Clara Wieck Schumann to several tracks from a groundbreaking album by French violinist Esther Abrami titled “Women.” We’ll hear music from that album by French composer Pauline Viardot, Jewish composer and poet Ilse Weber and Brazilian composer Chiquinha Gonzaga.
Open Nights, hosted by Mark Rodgers, 9pm – midnight MT
Mark is featuring all women on the vocal for the third International Women’s Day in a row. He’ll also get into summer touring plans for some legendary women-led bands like Canadian metal legends Kittie, and Nobro.
Sunday, March 8
Morningsong, hosted by Joe Hartfeil, 6am – 8am MT
The first hour of Morningsong (solo and chamber performances) will celebrate great female composers and performers through the ages from Hildegard Von Bingen to Isabella Leonarda to Margaret Bonds to Jessica Sparvier-Wells to Martha Argerich.
Very Early Music, hosted by Lark Clark, 8am – 9am MT
Lark will be featuring Women Who Did (compose, play and sing in Renaissance Italy), like Barbara Strozzi, on Very Early Music.
The Celtic Show, hosted by Andy Donnelly, 9am – 11am MT
Both hours of The Celtic Show will be dedicated to “Celtic Women of the World.”
Folk Routes, hosted by Tom Coxworth, 11am – 1pm MT
Hour Two of Folk Routes will celebrate International Women’s Day. Tom will feature an interview, music, and conversation with Terra Spencer.
He’ll also shine a historic spotlight on Sarah Makem, recognizing her influential work in collecting and preserving Irish traditional music in the 1950s. Additional highlights he’ll include will be recognizing women nominated for the Canadian Folk Music Awards, as well as women’s contributions to folk music.
Bluegrass Hour, hosted by Darcy Whiteside, 1pm – 2pm MT
The full hour will be a celebration of incredible musicians of bluegrass and old time music, who happen to be female. Darcy will feature Alison Brown collaborating with The Indigo Girls and share the story of how Cathy Fink and Mary Marxer came to form the bluegrass supergroup Blue Rose.
We also will be listening to The Coon Creek Girls, a pioneering string band from the 1930s that played the White House in 1939, entertaining Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt as well as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
Roy’s Record Room, hosted by Roy Forbes, 2pm – 3pm MT
Triple R Radio is celebrating International Women’s Day with a mini-history of country music women at 78 rpm. Spanning the years 1930 to 1953, you’ll hear familiar and obscure sides from the likes of Lulu Belle, the Coon Creek Girls, Rosalie Allen, Texas Rose, Charlene Arthur, Vivian Brown with the Hillbilly Jewels, the Carter Family, the Girls of the Golden West, Betty Cody, and more.
Voices in Jazz, hosted by Dianne Donovan, 3pm – 4pm MT
Dianne will be featuring women singers/songwriters, music and lyrics to celebrate International Women’s Day.
World Spinning, hosted by Lark Clark, 4pm – 6pm MT
Lark will be featuring women: Women Who Shouldn’t (play sacred drums): Bobi Cespedes, Brenda Navarrete, (be seen at all) female singers in Iran, on World Spinning.

Marek will be spinning music from incredible Indigenous women artists, from Tia Wood and Fawn Wood to Miss Kaninna to Black Belt Eagle Scout.
