International Women’s Day 2025

March 8, International Women’s Day, is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. At CKUA, our focus will be the cultural and musical contributions of women. Tune in for interesting conversations and fantastic music, on March 8 and in the days surrounding it. Catch shows OnDemand for one week after airing if you missed the live broadcast!

Sunday, March 2
World Spinning, 4pm – 6pm
You may have heard Maryam Toller on the theme for Little Mosque On The Prairie, and AR Rahman’s Bollywood hit Mayya Mayya. Maryam’s own group is Al Qahwa, Arabic for coffee and coffeehouse, a place where people gather for friendship – while political discussions carry on! Plus…Barred from singing by her family, Somali musician Sahra Halgan enlisted in the Somali Army during the civil war and served as a frontline nurse.  Sahra says, “The soldiers had other things to do than to prevent me from singing”.  Sahra has recently opened her own recording studio and cultural centre  – in Somalia! Host Amy van Keeken will feature some ambient and electronic music composers such as:  Laurie Spiegel, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Wendy Carlos, Nala Sinephro, Patricia Wolf and Hollie Kenniff

Tuesday, March 4
The Departure Lounge, 6pm – 8pm
Host Erin Ross will be rocking a guitar player theme for a 2nd week on the March 4 Departure Lounge with some totally righteous lady guitar players.

Wednesday, March 5
Far Out, 6pm – 8pm
Host Amy van Keeken will feature an interview with Kacy Lee Anderson (Kacy & Clayton) of Kacy Lee Anderson and The Waverley Pickers. They just released their debut album. Kacy will share a few songs from the album, what inspired them, and explain why the album is only available on their website.

Thursday, March 6
Discoveries, 9am – 11am
Host Leo Cripps will be dedicating two hours to women in music, with the second hour focusing on Canadian women in music.

Thursday, March 6
Thoroughfare, 1pm – 3pm
Join Tony King when he features all Canadian female composers and performers on Thoroughfare. Hear from artists like Julianna Riolino talking about invoking the spirit of Patsy Cline in her work. Titilope Sonuga will chat about the integral female figures in her life that inform her poetry and music and more. In addition we will celebrate the achievements of historical figures like Eleanor Collins, Canada’s first lady of jazz and we even explore composers of contemporary music such as Jocelyn Morlock. Tune in!

Thursday, March 6
A Time For Jazz, 6pm – 8pm
Host Kodi Hutchinson will be programming an evening of women-in-jazz with a heavy emphasis on Canadian musicians.

The Cookbook, 8pm – 10pm
Tune in for The Cookbook on March 6th when host Jeff Kynoch highlights woman leading the charge in jazz! Hear tracks from Jasmine Myra, Alice Coltrane, Tara Kannangara, Anna Butterss, Emma Jean-Thackray, Carla Bley, Audrey Ochoa, Jaimie Branch, Hiromi, Dorothy Ashby, Nubya Garcia, Stephanie Urquhart, Nala Sinephro, Bobbi Humphrey and lots more!!

Friday, March 7
This Just In, 9am – 11am
CKUA’s Allison Brock will join host Amy van Keeken on This Just In Friday, March 7 in the second hour.  They will celebrate and chat about what her 25 year CKUAnniversary means to Allison, and she’ll share a few tracks from a new release that she’s been spinning on her show Wide Cut Country.

Friday, March 7
Traffic Jams, 3pm-6pm
Edmonton-raised, Montreal-based singer and songwriter Marlaena Moore will join CKUA’s Lisa Wilton for a 30-Minute DJ set on Traffic Jams. She’ll talk about the inspiration behind a pair of songs from her recently released album, Because You Love Everything, and share a few of her favourite tunes, including tracks by Cindy Lee, The Breeders and Fleetwood Mac. Tune it at 4:15 pm on Traffic Jams.

Saturday, March 8
Mulligan Stew, 5pm – 7pm
Join Terry David Mulligan for Mulligan Stew when he shares interview clips that touched on mentors, women who lead the way, influencers and strong personal profiles. Tina Turner – running across 6 lanes of a freeway to get free of her husband and how she turned her life aroiund. Rhiannon Giddens – completely leading by example. Susan Tedeschi – a life in the blues. Sue Foley – One woman – one guitar. And all who came before her.
Plus, Ruth Pointer, Terra Lightfoot, Mariel Buckley, and a couple of surprises.

Saturday, March 8
Open Nights, 9pm – midnight
Host Mark Rodgers is building a program with all women on the vocals. He’s also looking ahead to North Country Fair with upbeat tunes from Lucette and Bridge City Sinners.

Monday, March 10
Catch & Release, 6pm – 8pm
Tune in to Catch & Release when Kerry Clarke shines a spotlight on women who shred/stellar instrumentalists – on guitars and many other instruments: Maud, Yasmin Williams, Alice Coltrane, Terra Lightfoot, Memphis Minnie, Cécile Doo-Kingue, Sheila E., Kira Roessler, Sarah Neufeld, Matana Roberts, Clea Anais, Basia Bulat, Rhiannon Giddens and many many more

Tuesday, March 11
Alberta Morning, 6am – 9am
Guest host Kerry Clarke will capture a moment in time to revel in the beats, harmonies and grooves of early girl groups: The Ronettes, the Shirelles, The Shangri-las, Martha and the Vandellas and the Stovel Sisters, plus she’ll spin funky and polyphonic female-fronted groups from around the world – tune in!
