The Picks

Orest Soltykevych: Menahem Pressler, “Suite Bergamasque: Clair de lune” by Claude Debussy

Menahem Pressler is an Israeli-American pianist whose family fled Nazi Germany. They eventually ended up in Palestine. In 1955, he appeared as the pianist of the Beaux Arts Trio, which existed for 53 years. Pressler recorded some 30 solo CDs. In 2014, at the age of 90, he made his debut with the famed Berlin Philharmonic. This piece comes from his latest CD, recorded last year at age 94.

Lionel Rault: Nils Lofgren, “Rock or Not”

Nils Lofgren, veteran guitarist with Bruce Springsteen’s E-Street band, as well as Neil Young’s Crazy Horse, returns with a new album called Blue With Lou. Have a listen!

Baba: Cam Penner, “Gather Round”

In Cam Penner’s voice and words: there’s sense of deep meaningful darkness, that would just suck you under, and you wouldn’t mind.

Leo Cripps: Coeur De Pirate, “Ne M’appelle Pas”

Here’s another great song from a progressive Canadian francofone artiste.

Kodi Hutchinson: Alex Pangman, “I Found A New Baby”

Alex is one of the many world-class artists coming to perform in Alberta for the jazz festivals in June. Catch her infectious brand of swing on June 14 in Calgary or June 27 in Edmonton.
