Every week, CKUA’s hosts submit their songs for our weekly House Blend playlist: an exciting new release, a beloved classic or just an old personal favourite. We mix it all together to create a sonic concoction that’ll help kick off your week. Check out what’s on this week’s playlist.

The Picks
Amy van Keeken: Durand Jones & The Indications, “Don’t You Know”
Their new album comes out March 1. Until then, the band has given us this first single, “Don’t You Know”, featuring drummer Aaron Frazer sharing vocal duties with Durand Jones. The track is smooooooth, soulful, romantic, swoon worthy. Thanks for the great Christmas present, lads.
Tom Coxworth: John Mayall w/Eric Clapton, “Hideaway
One of the finest example of early white blues. Clapton with Mayall exposed the world to his influences and opened the door to an even better electric guitarist
Cathy Ennis: Jann Arden, “Good Mother”
Jann Arden’s beautiful mother, Joan, passed away the evening of December 29th after her valiant battle with Alzheimer’s. Lucky for us, Jann has memorialized Joan through her music. This one is my favourite.
Orest Soltykevych: Azuline Duo, “Suite Buenos Aires” by Maximo Diego Pujol
Maximo Diego Pujol is an Argentine guitarist and composer whose style is inspired by dances and rhythms of his homeland. Pujol studied at the Buenos Aires Conservatory, working his way through school playing tangos in nightclubs. In 1995, Pujol wrote a four-movement work for a flute and guitar duo, with each movement depicting a neighbourhood in his hometown of Buenos Aires.
Matt Masters: Ridley Bent, “You Got Lucky”
There is always a good reason to dig into Tom Petty’s catalogue of amazing songs. Ridley Bent’s album, Wild Card, features a stand-out version of “You Got Lucky” that runs the table.
Baba: Sam Morrow, “Paid By The Mile”
Lyrics, the beat and also rather important sing-along possibilities! Happy New Year!
Amy van Keeken: William Tyler, “Fail Safe”
William Tyler’s upcoming album, Goes West, will be released January 25 on Merge Records. Much like his 2016 debut, Modern Country, the album promises vistas of layered intricate guitar work and a sense of space, if the first single “Fail Safe” is any indication. So lovely.
Hayley Muir: Carmanah, “Send It To Me”
Very cool tune from this self-described “West Coast Soul” Victoria band. Groovy bass-line, powerful vocals and a bit of doo-wop harmonies. Carmanah will be in Alberta mid-February: February 16 in Calgary and February 22 in Edmonton.
