Five Questions with The Black Feathers

Interview

The Black Feathers are a husband-and-wife duo, Ray Hughes and Sian Chandler, based in Gloucestershire, UK, who play a blend of folk and Americana. They’re on their way to Alberta for eight shows in October. We asked them about their music, the tour, and their life together.

How long have you been making music together, and how did you meet?

We’ve been writing Black Feathers songs as long as we’ve been married, 14 years. We met in Sian’s hometown through mutual musical friends.

Soaked to the Bone has been described as a “breakthrough record.” What do you still enjoy about performing those songs?

We still play a bunch of songs from that album live. They’re our comfort songs. Like old slippers that know the exact shape of our feet! People still enjoy those songs live, and some still cry. Wouldn’t want to deprive them of that.

How much do you tour these days, and what are your favourite places to play?

We usually head out for about six months of the year, though not in one go. Usually split into two or three tours. We’re geographically neutral in terms of favourites. Everywhere has something different to offer. We just love to play anywhere there are people to listen. That’s what makes a great show, rather than the location.

What artists or groups are you listening to these days?

We’re quite broad when it comes to the music we listen to. It could be anything from opera to folk to hip hop to progressive metal. It just depends on the day!

What can people expect when your tour stops in Alberta?

A bit of a rollercoaster, to be honest! Sad songs, happy songs, and funny stories. We hope they leave with their cups full and a smile on their faces, and maybe a CD or two! 😉

This October, The Black Feathers will have live concerts in Camrose, Hardisty, Calgary, Nanton, Veinerville, Calgary, Priddis, and Okotoks. Find information here.

“Take Me Back” is from the Black Feathers’ album Soaked to the Bone.
