We hope you’re enjoying CKUA Summer. We love being at festivals around the province, taking in the entertainment and meeting new people.
We can’t be everywhere, however. That’s why it’s great to have Bronson Kashino on the team!
Kashino is a NAIT Radio & Television student, and he’s at CKUA this summer for his practicum placement. It’s his voice you hear when a 90-second “microfeature” airs on CKUA telling you about Alberta’s summer festivals and cultural celebrations.
“There’s a ton of stuff happening around the province, and what I’ve learned is that every village of 100 people has a really fun festival,” laughs Kashino. “I talk to people in Milo and Athabasca and other places, and those are some of my favourite interviews. It goes beyond Edmonton and Calgary. We broadcast all across Alberta, so I love to talk to people from all over the province.”
And it’s more than just music festivals. You might hear Kashino talk about a film festival, an art walk, or a comedy fest.
“We’ll cover any festival where a bunch of people will get together. Sometimes that’s music, but there are also theatre, and cultural festivals,” says Kashino. “This week I’ll be talking to the organizers of Fiestaval, which is Calgary’s Latin festival. Some of these events are the coolest to me because they are not ticketed. They are free, and people just show up to enjoy them! It’s a great chance to be a part of something different and interesting on a weekend.”
Kashino says that it can be hard to keep the features within the 90-second limit. “The best interviews are the ones where someone tells me something that they are excited about. When people talk about their passion for local music or for theatre, they make the short feature a little story. It’s not a commercial. People can find things using Google, but what you can’t Google is how excited the organizer is.”
Tune in to hear these 90-second features throughout the summer. We’ll cover festivals that are happening all around the province.
