Flying Canoë Volant
Thoroughfare with Tony King
Listen OnDemand (Wednesday, January 22)
Maybe you’ve experienced the otherworldly tapestry of Dylan Toymaker’s lights fashioned to create spectacular patterns in the snow as you stroll through Mill Creek. If this is familiar to you, the magic of the Flying Canoë Volant probably still resonates in your mind. The festival that has become a winter spectacular in Edmonton, began very humbly in 2014, welcoming 3,000 visitors, now it is a going concern occupying a corridor of Mill Creek, up through Rutherford School and into La Cité Francophone. Tony King had a chat with Daniel Cournoyer, Executive Director of La Cité Francophone, and from there it’s boots on the ground as he touches base with artists like Dylan Toymaker and musician Dave Cunningham. Plus, he dives into the story of just how the story of the Flying Canoë came about through educator Roger Dalliere, plus chef Joseph Vuong will be on the show.

Winter Magic Festival Preview
Discoveries with Leo Cripps
Tune in: Monday, February 3 from 10am – 11am MT
The town of Hinton is known as the “Gateway to the Rockies,” a small and welcoming entrance to Jasper National Park and Alberta mountain playground. Since 1987, every February, Hintonites come together to create something amazing: The Hinton Winter Magic Festival. It’s two weeks of winter activities, breaking up the monotony of the cold weather and bringing residents and visitors together to revel in the winter wonderland. The 38th Winter Magic Festival runs from February 7 – 23 at different venues in the town. Leo Cripps previews the The Hinton Winter Magic Festival, on Discoveries. Begin the celebration with thoughts of warm places with the Hawaiian luau, make mittens with the Rocky Mountain Quilters, get the adrenaline pumping with the fat bike endurance race, and support a great cause with the Coldest Night of the Year walk.
Thank you to all the donors who gave their financial support to increase our winter festival coverage.
