Checking in with Our Last 50/50 Winner, Janice B.

Story
Janice B. of Calgary, posing with a Giorgio Ghidòli print she purchased in Italy. It was nice to splash out a bit more on souvenirs thanks to her 50/50 prize, she says.

It’s not a bad scenario: returning from one’s trip to Italy, only to start planning an African safari. That’s been life for our last 50/50 winner, Janice B. from Calgary.

To be fair, she was already leaving for Italy in two weeks when she heard she’d won our 50/50. Still, she says it was the windfall that made a second big trip possible in 2024.

“It’s one of those big bucket list trips that you save for, for a while,” she says, of the African adventure. “This helped make it happen a little sooner than I anticipated.”

The trip will be 14 days of travel to three different national parks in Botswana and then to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. So far her trips have been mostly to Europe.  “This will be very outside my normal travel,” she says. “Stretching the boundaries!”

She and a girlfriend are taking the trip together. No European hotels here, they’ll be out in the wilds, sleeping in “fancy tents.”

“The variety of animals we’re supposed to see is incredible,” she says. “Elephants, lions, wildebeest, various birds, hippos, giraffes… We see the Kalahari Plains, all the animals associated with those different ecosystems.”

She says her recent time in Italy was also enhanced by winning the raffle. “You can breathe a little sigh of relief and not have to worry as much. It’s nice to have that ease. You don’t have to think about your budget as much,” Janice says.

Now we have a new 50/50 raffle up and running. Janice has already bought tickets, purely to support CKUA. “I don’t think lightning strikes twice in the same spot,” she laughs.

Supporting her beloved radio source is more crucial than ever, she says, with CKUA in the midst of a perfect storm of financial stress.

“When I listened to [CEO] Marc Carnes’ address, I was just gut-punched,” she says. “It brought tears to my eyes.”

“I can’t imagine not having CKUA in my life. It has to survive. And thrive,” she says, adamantly.

She encourages all CKUA listeners to buy raffle tickets. “I think we’re all winners if we support CKUA. I hope to be listening when it turns 100.”

We have a CKUA 50/50 raffle on now! Buy tickets here. They’re on sale until midnight, June 14. The draw will be made June 17.
