Baby Jey Hosts Residency

Story

We hope you are enjoying Residency. This hour-long program features fresh multi-genre programming from new voices and special guests. It follows Friday Night Blues Party, airing midnight – 1am MT on Saturdays.

We’ve had three Residency hosts so far, for six weeks each. Starting on April 5, Baby Jey will introduce his program, Song Journey.

His vision for the program is rooted in the idea that songs have connections to each other.

“The idea is that every song in the program has a link to the song that came before it. Maybe the first two songs have the same bass player. After that, maybe Songs Two and Three and were both composed backstage at the same folk festival.”

As for the styles that will be in the mix, Baby Jey says he will play folk, rock, singer-songwriter tracks, and perhaps some instrumental music as well. “I have pretty eclectic taste,” he says. “I hear commonalities among songs in different genres, and I try to find good blends in playlists.”

Baby Jey has experience in radio, having hosted university programs at CJSR in Edmonton and at WQKE, 93.9 FM in Plattsburgh, New York. It was friends Amy van Keeken and Grant Stovel who encouraged him to send a demo to CKUA.

He also notes that this hosting gig will not be his first time working for CKUA. In 2008, he was a (very) temporary employee.  At the old CKUA building at Jasper Avenue and 105 Street he worked for just one day when the record library needed to be moved from one floor to another. He laughs about it now. “The first time I was ever employed was at CKUA, for one day.”

So now it seems like a good fit to be hosting a program on CKUA. “I love radio, and I’ve been making mix tapes since I was a kid. I like putting songs together and sharing them with people.”

Tune in to hear Baby Jey, the newest host of Residency. His program, Song Journey, will air for six weeks starting Saturday, April 5, midnight – 1am MT.
