Tune in to The Upload on Thursday, November 13. Kate Stevens will be in conversation with Alan Doyle. He’s known for his musical work with Great Big Sea and as a solo artist. He’s also just written his fourth book, called The Smiling Land: All Around the Circle in My Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s a travel guide and more, full of funny stories and insider’s tips.
We asked Kate Stevens what she’s looking forward to about her chat with Alan Doyle, and she had lots to say.
“I’m such a fan. Alan Doyle is a great ambassador for Canada, and for Newfoundland and Labrador,” says Stevens. “The book is wonderful; it’s a heartwarming story. He’s such a joyful man. I just don’t think he could have written a downer book. This is his book and he is so passionate in his writing.”
Great Big Sea was influential in Kate’s musical life, at home and beyond. “My mom played a lot of Celtic music in the house. We danced around the kitchen. Great Big Sea was a big part of that. And then of course they had the big radio hits, too!”
Stevens hopes she has the chance to talk music—not just books—when she connects with Doyle. She does not hesitate for even a nanosecond when asked to pick a favourite Great Big Sea or Alan Doyle song. “It’s got to be ‘Ordinary Day.’ It’s such a natural, upbeat hit. As soon as you hear it, you have to move. Let’s go!”
