As Alberta’s voice for music, arts, and culture, we have had several discussions regarding the use of generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the music we broadcast.
After these conversations internally and with our community, we have made the decision to not knowingly play AI-generated music on CKUA.
CKUA’s commitment has always been to support and champion artists and art workers, particularly those rooted in our local and regional community. Playing AI-generated music raises broader questions around authenticity, attribution, copyright, and the value we place on human creative expression. These are questions we take seriously.
We know the cultural landscape is changing quickly and there are no simple answers. That’s why we are currently in the process of developing a formal policy that will address AI across our broadcasting and digital platforms. We will share this policy when it is ready.
