A Day to Listen 2025

Story

On Tuesday, September 30, CKUA will join with more than 500 radio stations throughout Canada for A Day To Listen. Hear the words of Indigenous leaders, artists, storytellers, and residential school survivors.

A Day To Listen is presented in partnership with the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, which aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Their work is inspired by Chanie’s story and Gord’s call to build a better Canada.

This year’s theme is “The Path Here, The Path Ahead.” Hosts January Rogers, Kiefer Collison, and William Prince will be included in our programming. Between 6am and 6pm MT, you will hear stories and interviews from Indigenous community leaders, artists, creators, and elders, revealing culture, community, and how we are all connected.

CKUA’s hosts will also choose music by Indigenous artists. It is our hope that the whole broadcast day reflects the spirit and the importance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

On Alberta Morning, guest host Joe Hartfeil will share music by Cikwes, a JUNO nominee from Bigstone Cree Nation who blends chanting & hand drumming with soul. You’ll also hear music by Tahltan and inland Tlingit performance and sound artist Edzi’u and Innu singer-songwriter Florent Vollant.

Desiree Dorion and Brandi Vezina will be Leo Cripps’ guests on Discoveries. You’ll also hear music by William Prince, Julian Taylor, Beatrice Deer, Twin Flames, The Jerry Cans, and more.

During The Upload, host Kate Stevens will focus on music by young and emerging Indigenous artists. Hear tunes by Tia Wood, Siibii, Wyatt C Louis, and more.

Join Tony King for Thoroughfare. He’ll play music by Cris Derksen, Kinnie Starr, Jay Gilday, Sister Ray, ASKO, and others. In the second hour, he’ll point north and share music from Inuit artists such as Saali & the Ravenhearts, Crook the Kid, Digawolf, and more.

During From Stage to Screen, host Aaron Au will share music from the shows and films of some great Indigenous actors, including Graham Greene, Tom Jackson, Adam Beach, and Tantoo Cardinal. He’ll also explore the small but burgeoning Indigenous video game industry and share some soundtracks from Indigenous films.

Twilight will feature an all Indigenous artist playlist including Bizhiki, Matthew Cardinal, Elisapie, Willie Dunn, ASKO, Mildred Bailey, Alanis Obomsawin. Join host Amy van Keeken.

Reconciliation is the responsibility of every Canadian. It means acknowledging the past and ensuring history does not repeat or get forgotten. We can reflect on working towards reconciliation in our own lives and create our own personal reconciliation plans. A great place to begin is by participating in events in our area.
