55 Years of Natch’l Blues

Interview
Holger Petersen with B. B. King

Natch’l Blues started in 1969, when Holger Petersen was studying Radio and Television Arts at NAIT. He had been calling the station to talk music with host Tony Dillon-Davis.

“I started coming in to CKUA. I was writing for The NAIT Nugget, NAIT’s student newspaper. I did record reviews, concert reviews, and interviews. Tony Dillon-Davis asked me if he could air some of them. I edited them as a volunteer, and he would run them in his show. Then, Program Director Ed Kilpatrick asked me to fill in for Tony from time to time. He knew I was interested in blues, so late in 1968 he asked me if I would like to host a blues show. That’s how it came to be.” Then he adds simply, “I just fell in love with CKUA.”

Over the past 55 years, Natch’l Blues has become an audience favourite. The staying power of the program—and its host–can be attributed to Petersen’s work ethic, talent, and curiosity. He says he dedicated himself to learning about blues music and the artists who make it.

“I was reading everything I could, and I subscribed to magazines. It was the British Invasion that pointed me in that direction. The Stones, The Yardbirds, and other groups were influenced so much by the blues. Performers like Otis Rush, John Lee Hooker, and Muddy Waters were the writers of much of that music.”

Petersen’s passion for collecting music has complemented his work as a radio host beautifully. “I love collecting vinyl records. Everywhere I go, in the States and around the world, going to used record stores is a passion for me.” He adds, “Blues is regional music, and there are so many independent releases. It’s an endless area that you can research.”

Petersen also enjoys talking with musicians. He estimates that he has done more than 2500 interviews over the past 55 years.

It’s clear that Petersen loves connecting with people. Whether he’s talking to an artist or a listener, the vibe is the same. “There are so many knowledgeable people out there. I like hearing from them, and I love getting suggestions from listeners. I try to stay on top of what’s happening on the scene with Canadian artists and touring musicians. Many of them are my heroes. I think the blues and roots community, and all of the people involved in it, are very inspiring. It’s a treat to hear from them. These people are in it for the love of music. Just like CKUA’s audience and community.”

Some of Holger’s colleagues have shared their reflections on this occasion:

“I had heard Natch’l Blues before I started working at CKUA in 1978. He was one of the hosts I had listened to before I got there. I recall being in awe of Holger and everything he does in media. He’s involved in so many things, and he has all the hardware and awards to prove it, including The Order of Canada. Holger is someone I have always respected and admired.” – Cam Hayden, host of Friday Night Blues Party

“Holger Peterson is an invaluable member of CKUA’s community. He brings an incredible depth of musical knowledge, passion, and expertise that is unparalleled. I learn so much whenever I listen to his show or whenever I’m lucky enough to hang out with him in person!” – Dawn Pemberton, host of Get On the Good Foot and co-host of On the Rise

“In the summer of 1973, I was in Edmonton, playing a gig at the now-legendary Hovel coffee house. At one point, a tall, friendly guy approached me with an invitation to record some of my songs for his radio show, ‘The ACME Sausage Company.’ That was my introduction to CKUA and to my good friend, Holger Petersen. Since that time, I’ve watched as Holger, both on radio and with his Stony Plain record company, has championed the blues as well as Canadian music of all kinds, including mine. I’m proud to call Holger my pal. Congrats on 55 years of Natch’l Blues, Mr. Petersen. Thank you for everything you’ve done for blues and roots music during your long and fruitful career.” – Roy Forbes, host of Roy’s Record Room

“How in the heck can you even begin to evaluate and appreciate the ways that Holger Petersen has nurtured this vibrant Alberta blues/roots music community? It’s a bit like a fish trying to appreciate water! Luckily, there milestone moments like this: one person hosting a show every week, no substitutes, for FIFTY-FIVE YEARS!!! It’s a mind-boggling testament to his profound passion, community commitment, and flat-out love for the music. Thank you, Holger!” – Grant Stovel, host of Alberta Morning

“Holger Petersen is a broadcasting legend; his achievements go far beyond radio, though. From author to a founding member of Alberta Recording Industries Association (now known as Alberta Music), to countless other awards and honorary degrees – Holger’s deep love and respect for music, and the musicians who create it, is clear. And worthy of a celebration! I grew up listening to Natch’l Blues, and never anticipated that I’d one day get the opportunity to work alongside him. Holger embodies so much of what makes our community great. The curiosity of music exploration, support and championing independent artists, and of course, collecting more records than is considered reasonable to the average human. Happy 55th anniversary, Holger Petersen!” – Arianne Smith-Piquette, CKUA Content Director

Congratulations, Holger!
